All those frequently asked questions about fleas answered – because let’s get real – education is mos key:
1. WHAT ARE FLEAS?
Fleas are ectoparasites and they’re gross.
2. DO CAT FLEAS ALSO ATTACK DOGS?
Although cat fleas and dog fleas are two different species, they’re not picky at all and will attach to either – depending on their mood.
Interestingly enough though, cat fleas are most often found on cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs.
3. HAVE CAT FLEAS DEVELOPED RESISTANCE TO FLEA PRODUCTS?
OH YES. They’re resistant to more products than any other type of flea. Rotating products will of course help decrease resistance nè.
4. WHAT TREATMENTS ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE?
One of our MOST frequently asked questions about fleas – what is the most effective flea treatment on the market.
The answer? Any premium treatment, as the majority of premium flea products are pretty powerful and are defs bound to get the job done.
5. DO FLEAS ATTACK WILD ANIMALS?
Oh but of course – these rebels plague wild animals as much as they plague house pets.
6. DO ADULT FLEAS JUMP ON AND OFF ANIMALS?
Fleas are rather serious homeowners. Meaning, once an adult flea finds a pet to live and feed on, it will remain on the pet to feed, mate, lay eggs, build a life, create a family, make memories and retire – the whole katootie.
Soooo the answer is no, they don’t jump on and off of animals. The eggs however fall off our pets and then the larvae and pupa mature in carpets, grass and so on.
7. DO I HAVE TO TREAT MY HOME AS WELL?
As mentioned above – larvae and pupa love vacationing in your home.
Therefore it’s absolutely crucial to treat your home environment at the same time you treat your pet, to reduce the chances of another infestation several weeks later.
Vacuuming the entire household (and of course discarding the contents of the vacuum cleaner immediately in a sealed plastic bag), washing the bedding on a high heat and using the ULTRUM DURATION SPRAY in the home are all vital to-do’s to help prevent a flea-spree.
8. WHAT IS FLEA DIRT?
Female fleas have no body image issues and consume 15 times their body weight in blood. This of course passes through their digestive system and is defecated out onto the skin in the form of comma-shaped faeces known as flea dirt.
9. HOW DO FLEAS SUCK BLOOD?
Jaaaaa, so it’s rather nasty, but fleas drink blood using two mouth parts. One part squirts saliva and partially digested blood into the host, and the other sucks blood from the host.
This is also how fleas transmit pathogens, like tapeworms, to your pet.
10. CAN FLEAS SUCK ENOUGH BLOOD TO KILL PETS?
Just like vampires, fleas do possess the ability to proverbially suck your pet dry and can actually kill kittens, puppies, calves, lambs and goats. Yep, toats what nightmares are made of.
11. HOW FAST DO FLEAS FEED?
About 60% of fleas will feed within 5 minutes of jumping onto your pet, and almost 100% of fleas are engorged with blood within 1 hour of being on your pet. So let’s just say – pretty fast.
12. HOW QUICKLY CAN FLEAS LAY EGGS?
Females lay eggs 24-36 hours after her first blood meal and they lay up to 50 eggs a day.
13. HOW QUICKLY DO FLEA EGGS HATCH?
If the temperature is 35°C and there is 70% humidity, half of all flea eggs hatch within 36 hours. If it is only 12°C, half of all flea eggs will hatch within 6 days.
14. HOW LONG CAN NEWLY HATCHED FLEAS LIVE BEFORE THEY ATTACH TO A PET?
In a humid environment, over 60% of newly hatched fleas can live without a host for 2 months. In a cool, dry environment, only 10% will live without an immediate host. Humidity is the key to flea survival.
15. HOW QUICKLY CAN A FLEA GO THROUGH ITS ENTIRE LIFE CYCLE?
The entire flea life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) can take place in less than 3 weeks.
16. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE ONE FLEA TO DEVELOP INTO A MILLION FLEAS?
It takes about 6 weeks.
In 3 weeks, one flea can pass through its entire life cycle and can lay 1000 eggs. In another 3 weeks, those eggs can hatch and lay 1,000 eggs each, so within 6 weeks, it is possible to have a million new fleas.
17. WHY DO FLEAS PREFER PETS TO PEOPLE?
Fleas prefer dark areas and gravitate to haired areas on your pet’s skin. Because pets have more hair than people (and thus more dark hiding places), fleas prefer pets to people.
18. DO FLEAS LIKE SOME AREAS ON YOUR PET’S BODY MORE THAN OTHERS?
Yes, fleas prefer the rump and the head where your pet cannot reach to remove them.
Fleas also find the belly a great area to invade. On some cats, you’ll find fleas high along the spine between the shoulder blades as well.
19. DOES EVERYONE HAVE A FLEA PROBLEM?
Unfortunately, flea problems are widespread and few homes are spared; not even spotless homes.
20. DO FLEAS TRANSMIT DISEASES?
Ag but natuurlik! Another one of our MOST frequently asked questions about fleas.
And brace yourselves – fleas DO transmit several infectious diseases (incl. the actual plague) and tapeworms.
So do rid yourself, your pet, your home and your life from these mini-beasts.
