OH BOY – South African summers can be absolutely brutal at times; so here are some tips and tricks on how to keep your dog cool during this scorching hot season.
Remember, heatstroke is really no joke.
☼ HYDRATION IS EVERYTHING
Not to sound like captain obvious, but hydration is key.
Keep clean and cool water available at all times. Place water bowls in shaded areas to help prevent water from becoming lukewarm, unpleasant and gross – bleh.
Why not indulge in a PET DRINKING FOUNTAIN for that constant stream of fresh and filtered water for your pet to enjoy on tap. It’s all the rage and uber convenient to have in your home.
☼ HELP YOUR PET BEAT THE HEAT AND KEEP THEM COOL
Bust open the AC, fan, fridge and windows – anything to let crisp air circulate through your home.
Entertain yourselves with interactive games indoors to prevent your pets escaping into the scorching temperature outside.
You can even spice up the fun by giving your cats a cold ice cube to bat around the kitchen floor – as the secret to cooling them off fast = their paws.
Another great way to keep those furry bodies cool is by stroking their coats with a damp cloth or even by placing ice cubes in your pet’s drinking bowl.
☼ SUMMER WALKS
Taking your pet for a walk is a super idea – please just check pavements, cement and bricks before heading out for a walk though. Surfaces tend to absorb heat fast and could injure their paws within the blink of an eye.
ePETstore’s in-house vet suggests placing the back of your hand on the surface. If it’s too hot for you to keep it there for at least 5 seconds, then obviously it’s too hot for your pet to walk on.
Beat the heat by going early in the morning, late in the afternoon or simply sticking to walkies on grass. AND AGAIN – don’t forget to take loads of H2O for them on your journey, TRAVEL BOWLS do wonders.
Have you heard of the JET STREAM COOLING VEST? Check it out!
☼ SPLASH THE HEAT AWAY
Hit the pool, pond, river or beach like a champ – I’m not even joking, this is absolutely a great way to chill and chillax.
Don’t own a pool? Now would be a great time to figuratively splash some moola on those spectacular shell-shaped kiddies pools – they’re absolutely classic.
If you don’t live in a water scarce area, you can even open the sprinklers for a few minutes at a time to partake in some sprinkler water splashing fun.
☼ FOOD IS THE BEST HEAT-DISTRACTOR
Use your freezer for something other than just broccoli and brussel sprouts. Simply freeze their CHEW TOYS to provide them with something cold to suck on.
Go above and beyond and fill their toys with treats, soft kibbles, wet food or even peanut butter (just make sure it’s sugar / xylitol free) and let them cool off with a little reward waiting in the centre. Because let’s get real – who doesn’t like surprises right?
If you do live in a water scarce area – save water and invest in this hassle-free COOL TEETHING STICK. It can be frozen over and over again, is mould-resistant, adored and no water is required.
☼ GROOMING GOES A LONG WAY
Don’t let them suffer it out due to genetics, give your dogs a nice soothing and cooling bath and brush.
Remember those sensational shell-shaped kiddies pool mentioned above? Those are simply fabulous to sneak in a quick bath too, without them even noticing.
The extra fur that keeps your dog warm in winter may also keep them cool in summer. So if unsure to trim or not to trim – speak to your trusted vet. Long haired cats can also take delight in a trim session under sedation – ONLY done by a vet nè.
☼ DON’T THROW SHADE, PROVIDE IT
Double check that you’ve placed kennels, kiddies pools and pet beds in shaded areas for your pets to take comfort in.
Umbrellas are great to move the shade to a location of your choice. Keeping your pets out of direct sunlight of course reduces their risk of getting heatstroke and cancer as well.
☼ HELP YOUR PET BEAT THE HEAT WITH THESE HONOURABLE HEAT-BEATING HEROES
- Protect their bodies with an appropriate PET SUNSCREEN. Some dogs and cats are especially prone to sunburn, so just don’t let your pet fall victim to lobster-red skin – hmm kay.
- Summer time and swim time are synonymous, so crank up the fun with the ORKA FLYER – it floats and flies, making swim time just the best time evuur!
- Prevention is better than cure, but if you must cure – nourish and repair your dog’s sun-baked skin with the DERMOSCENT BIO-BALM.
- And last, but by far not the least – you defs can’t go wrong with a tub of cool and delicious DOG ICE-CREAM.
